Forming, storming, norming and performing are recognised stages of group development
The duration of these stages varies and fluctuates throughout a season,
and it applies to all members of the squad, including management. It is
no coincidence that successful teams have experienced these phases and
fast forwarded to the performing level.
Teams at the top of the pile tend to
have established playing and management
personnel and a high level of cohesion
Cohesion, a key component of team spirit, reflects the 'togetherness' of a team, and occurs when players unite in pursuit of a common goal and become greater than the sum of their parts.
One disgruntled player or a player due to leave the Club can destroy team cohesion
It is the role of the Head Coach to monitor the impact players have on team cohesion and take steps when problems arise. Generally, teams with cohesion exhibit the following:
- High motivation
- Strong team spirit
- Higher levels of punctuality
- Better communication
- Less conflict
- Mutual respect and trust
- Clear and agreed goals
Processes to develop cohesion are similar to those used to support team spirit but with a specific emphasis on group identity.
